Q
uestion 1:
After a few years of working for someone else, I am re-entering the ranks of business owners. I know I will have some employees for whom I must make child support payments. What do I need to know?

Answer 1:
As of October 1, 1999, federal law required all states to process child support from a central location. This is advantageous for business owners with employees from more than one county. Only one payment check is sent, rather than sending checks to different Clerk's offices. The payments are now sent to the State of Florida Disbursement Unit at: FLSDU, P.O. Box 8500, Tallahassee, FL 32314-8500.

You will need to send a list with information on each employee- including name, social security number, case number, the county in which the case originated and the amount withheld in the current pay period along with each payment sent.

Question 2:
It is time consuming and expensive to print the lists every week and send a check. Do I have any options?

Answer 2:
Yes! It has been estimated that it actually costs an employer roughly $5 per employee for all the work associated with making child support payments, if they are not done electronically. The website www.MyFloridaCounty.com provides employers a way to securely set up a standing account and send money with the click of a mouse, saving time and money.

If needed, emergency and cash payments can still be made to the County Clerk's office.
