Renovation and Restoration
of the 1912 Cortez Schoolhouse
|
|
With a grant from the Florida
Department of State's Bureau of Historic Preservation,
restoration work will begin at the 1912 Cortez
Schoolhouse shortly. These photographs clearly
show the amount of deterioration that has occurred
inside the building while showing its great potential
as a museum. The volunteer crew has undertaken
a lot of deconstruction while awaiting funding
that will enable the restoration.

Were starting the work below ground level.
|

Weve got floors, ceiling, and walls to
work on.
|

The new flooring will have to match the old.
|

The restoration of the front porch is one of
the first projects we are undertaking.
|

Robert Sailors modified the interior of the
South classroom.

Hand woven carpet and hand woven cushion covers,
the art of Robert Sailors.
|

The non-native and invasive species had to
go. The replanting is just beginning.
|

Hopefully this stucco will be able to be removed.

Meet some of our loyal volunteers!

The volunteer crew has undertaken
a lot of deconstruction while awaiting funding that
will enable the restoration. Additional photos show
the volunteer program in full swing building boats
at the Museum's temporary home in the Cortez Community
Center at 123rd St. Crt. W. The boat in the photos
was launched to guarantee that it floated and then
raffled at the Cortez Fishing Festival in February.

Volunteers take their time to measure twice
and cut once.
|

The boat begins to take shape.

Volunteers carry boat to her initial launch.
